For the younger crowds this Halloween, the Maine Academy of Modern Music is hosting a rock show at One Longfellow Square. Several teen bands will be “melting faces at the creepiest all-ages costume party in town,” according to a press release.

Several young rockers will perform, including The Mean Faces, Yard Sail, and Work In Progress.

It’s MAMM’s second scary show to celebrate the ghoulish occasion, designed to give the middlings something to do.

“We wanted to help create a fun, all-age opportunity for kids to celebrate, kids who are too old for trick-or-treating and too young to go to the bars,” said Jeff Shaw, founder and executive director of MAMM.

His son, Brayden, 10, is in a band called Snooks and also plays in The Mean Faces, getting in tune on guitar, drums, keyboards and vocals.

Last year, MAMM served 750 kids statewide in all of their programs, which include summer camps, the Battle of the Bands, and free guitar and drum lessons to kids at the Preble Street Teen Center.

“We also worked with the REAL School and the Spurwink School,” Shaw said.

This summer’s “Playing for Change” video, with the song “Understand,” had the younger Shaw on drums on the back of a lobster boat. He was one of several MAMM students featured, as well as Amy Allen, Lyle Divinsky, Raffi Der Simonian, Pete Kilpatrick, Kenya Hall, and North of Nashville.

The music program is hoping to expand their efforts this year.

“We’re looking to launch a program with Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland,” Shaw said.

At last year’s inaugural show, there were a lot of wild costumes and loud rock and roll. Again this year, it’s not just about punk music.

“Each band has its own sound,” he said. “Yard Sail has an ’80s theme, others go with rock or country. There’s a little bit of everything.”
